Yesterday I blogged about the little things in software development.  Big things are important, little things have the power to distract from, or reinforce, your message. Little things, like your shoelace untied. Or your hair messed up. Or a stain on your shirt. Or a resume that is folded in half, or a business card that is dog-earred, or facial hair that just seems out of place, or The list can go on and on.  Im not saying that people cant be unusual, or be independent, or go against any grain, etc. Im not saying its right for people to judge us for little  indiscretions, although they do it anyway (so do you). What Im saying is, pay attention to the little things and perhaps youll come across as more professional, or the better candidate, or a strong networker, or something similar. You constantly see people who have been contracted after you getting management positions while you still are doing what you are told. And you’ve started to wonder why you never get a chance like everybody. Many variables might be influencing this scenario and can be used to explain why you aren’t moving up in your career â€" and maybe more than one might be happening at the same time. Therefore, it is important that you stop and reflect with a bit of self-analysis following our suggestions below. You may be able to figure out if, somehow, you are sabotaging your chances in the company. You have a bad relationship with your team Look around you while you are at the office: do people like you? Sure, you might be thinking that you aren’t there to be liked but to do your job. The thing is that your boss is the first person that people will ask for an opinion about giving you a promotion or not, or, in many cases, they are the responsible for the final decision themselves. So, yes, you will want to make sure that your boss sees you as a great asset to the company and ready to climb higher positions. They need to trust that you have the right soft and hard skills for the job so they won’t have a problem on their hands after vouching for you. Try to address it as soon as you can, broadcasting throughout the company all those ideas that you might have been keeping to yourself over the last years, so they will know that you can contribute in a more positive way. Don’t wait for the next meeting: just write down your suggestions and deliver them to your boss or whoever is in charge. They will congratulate you for your initiative. You ask too often about raises and promotions When was the last time you asked about a raise or a promotion? And how often do you do it? If you are constantly talking about it, complaining about being left behind, or inquiring about the opportunities available, this might be the reason why you aren’t getting either of these. Of course, it is important to ensure that people know that you wish to move up in your career. But you should also understand that asking about it all the time might be making you sound annoying and irritating. The HR department and your boss certainly have heard you since the first time that you asked for it, and, probably, there is an appropriate time of the year when you can throw a quick reminder to them. But don’t overdo it, or your chances to hear your name being called will just keep decreasing. You havent been achieving your goals If you aren’t managing to get your tasks done or to achieve your goals, the chances are that you won’t get promoted. Only the best employees on the team will be chosen, and you know that. And there is no point in blaming a colleague, your boss, or the company for your bad results. Actually, it will only make things worse as you need to show them that you can excel even under tough circumstances. The Best of Melbourne in Three Days You know that saying, Its five oclock somewhere?  Well, its springtime, somewhere.  Thats right, its easy to forget.  While those of us in the U.S. and the U.K. are buttoning up for winter, the happy residents of   down under are celebrating the arrival of spring. October and November temperatures averaging about 70   °F (21 °C)  during the day and about 50   °F (10 °C) at night.  What better excuse do you need to book a holiday or vacation to Melbourne,  the city with the title Most Livable City In the World? While a city of four million and all that it offers is impossible to experience in just a few days, we’ve put together a few of our favorites to make a three day visit into a cultural feast.  Its worth planning any trip in advance and we cant recommend this enough with Melbourne. Planning your travel ahead of time will help you scope out the best deals, map out the places you want to visit and most importantly, figure out your accommodation. Staying around Melbourne CBD means that you’re  in  the heart of the action, close to award winning restaurants, shopping districts and within reach of all modes of public transport. Day One:  The Shopping Well, of course a girl is going to put shopping at the top of the list.  What did you expect?  And theres a ton to choose from.  Heres three to tease you a bit. The Block Arcade.  The heritage shopping experience in the heart of Melbournes CBD part of the Golden Mile heritage walk. The Block Arcade is the place to shop and be seen.  Enough said. Third Drawer Down.  Third Drawer Down is a collection of shops with a gallery or museum flavor.  They  sell all sorts of eccentric or hard to find objects, as well as more tradition wares from all over the world. The Metropolis Bookstore.  Its been described as an oasis with a quirky book selection to suit any taste.  Perfect addition to an espresso or glass of wine to unwind at the end of your shopping day. Day Two:  The Sights Having had your fill of delightful shopping on day one, its time to shift from consumer to a lady of culture and environment.  Theres no shortage of either in Melbourne.  You can start with these selections. City Circle Tram.  Its a very big city.  Why not get a perspective of the whole of it and see some of the sights along the way?  Reminiscent of the San Francisco trolley cars, the trams give a wonder view of it all.  And, whats more, for the most part they are free.  Nice bonus, and a little redemption for the previous days spending. National Gallery of Victoria.  Fondly known as the NGV,  your first impression will be the inspiring architecture, but then prepare for a stunning and varied array of objets dart.  And of course you wont want to  miss the  Indigenous Art Collection, which is worthy of your visit on its own. Royal Botanical Gardens.  Whether you catch one of their many tours or wander on your own, youll want to stay forever in what many consider the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world.  If youre there during the warm months, the  gardens  host  the  Moonlight Cinema and theatre performances. Day Three:  The Wine After a day of shopping and a day taking in the sights, its time to relax and unwind.    And Australia is famous for wines that will help you do just that.  Your escape to Melbourne wont be complete without an escape    to  Yarra Valley for indulgent food and wine. Yarra Valley is home to 300 vineyards and 160 wineries.  My favorite way to experience it?  On a chauffeured    Yarra Valley wine tour that allows you to fully indulge in the offerings. How to Get Over a Job Search Slump - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career If you think of your job search like a sport, then it is natural to expect peaks and valleys in your own performance. Still, there is nothing more draining, humbling and dispiriting than consistent rejection and non-responsiveness during a job search. I’ve learned that when interviewing, challenges or problems will always arise and there are two ways to deal with them: the effective way and the ineffective way. The effective way is to assess where you are, determine where you want to be in your career, identify and implement creative solutions, and remain resilient. Knowing that, here are some key tactics to deal with a slump in your job search: 1) Understand that setbacks are temporary and work to increase your confidence level People who are confident that they will succeed persist longer in the face of difficulty and will ultimately reach their goals. Unfortunately, poor job search performance can fill a job seeker with self doubt and lack of belief in their ability to successfully navigate the open job market. Prior to tweaking your resume, practicing interviewing or altering your search methods, it’s imperative to restore and increase your confidence levels. One of the most effective ways to do so is to reflect on your past successes. When you find yourself full of self-doubt, take a moment to recall (as vividly as possible) some of the goals you have achieved and the obstacles you overcame to to do it. 2) Analyze the situation from the view point of the sales headhunter or hiring manager Be honest with yourself. If you were the headhunter, HR representative or hiring manager of the positions you apply to, would you be interested in your resume and cover letter? Are you truly applying to jobs and tailoring each application? Or are you sending out reams of resumes hoping something will stick? Are you connecting with the right headhunters and hiring managers and bringing something to the table? Or are you simply relying on others to find you your next job? Because it’s easy to apply for positions via the web, companies and staffing firms receive mass amounts of applications per open position. If you were the hiring manager would you be more interested in the job seekers who took the time to research your website and thoroughly read over the description or the applicants who seemingly put little to no effort in the application process? 3) Have an exact goal in mind and relentlessly pursue that objective Spell out exactly what you want to achieve. Without firm goals, job seekers are much from prone to wasting valuable time applying to the wrong positions with the wrong resume. Take some time and spell out what type of position you want, what industry you want that job to be in, what type of company you wish to work for and what date you aim to start the job. Then, begin to tweak your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile according to plan. Only when you get specific about the desired outcome of your search, will you know the proper steps you need to take in order to get there. 4) Diversify your job search avenues The average job seeker applies for positions through LinkedIn and on the major job boards, while the successful job seeker diversifies their search. Diversification means utilizing resources such as niche job boards, jobs posted directly on company websites, industry publications, and social media in order to increase your reach and ability to stand out. Many companies have positions that are dormant. This could be for a myriad of reasons â€" they’ve unsuccessfully posted the position, couldn’t find an efficient recruiting firm or just have not had the time to actively search lately. Make both your life and the hiring manager’s job easier by finding those positions. All it takes is basic internet research. Remember that Google is your friend. In the end Life involves setbacks and your job search is unlikely to break that rule. Signs indicated I should start my own business to help others find their voices and tell their stories through traditional and social media.My abilities to write, brainstorm, market and sell combine nicely with the mission of helping others. Yet something held me back. In courses at the Small Business Development Center, I feel frustrated while other people seem excited about their new ventures. A trainer suggests I talk to Energetic Business Coach Noah Brockman.Interestingly, Noah is the guy who sent me to Joshua at the beginning of my journey. He also suggested the small business training. Noah helps people clear head trash and blocks that keep them from business success. His unique methods work even if you don’t know what is holding you back. Noah’s work gave me clarity, confidence and freedom from old beliefs.I’m omitting countless other people who have assisted in my transformation during this journey. It seems that everyone I meet has something for me. People, books and education have just fallen onto my path at the precise time. And all of these people and things are somehow linked.I Feel Like a New PersonNow, the message that Joshua and I created months ago is spot on â€" not because the wording has changed â€" but because I have changed and polished myself. I seek lessons and they appear. These lessons built an excitement that I share instinctively.I could still be angry, asking “why me?” Yet I chose to think positive and take one baby step forward.One lesson sums up this journey: If you don’t know what you want or how to change, ask for help.
